I created my first professional page a few years ago in WordPress. At the time, I really liked WordPress. I used it for a few projects and found it to be a good platform for getting up and running quickly. However, the site was never as fast as I thought it should be, and the constant updates and maintenance made me feel like I should be looking for something new. During my most recent round of updates, I installed a new theme. The page itself worked, but none of the management pages would load. I spent hours trying to roll back, editing files on the server with FTP, and making changes to PHP files.

I’d been hearing more and more about static site generators, so a few months ago I decided to try one for a new blogging site. I used Jekyll for that project and was impressed by how quickly the site generated and how fast it was to load.

When my professional site started running into WordPress problems, I decided it was time for a change. Jekyll was nice, but I chose to try Hugo, another static site generator, instead. So far, so good. I like having the entire site in a Git repo for backup purposes. Docker containers make it very easy to rebuild the site no matter which computer I’m on (I use Windows, Mac, and Linux).

The site isn’t 100% complete yet, but if you’ve found your way here—welcome! Feel free to reach out on LinkedIn; I’d love to connect.
